GAO and Goals
According to reports, Iraq has only met 5 of the 18 benchmarks set by the president. Whats a laugh is that if they came from the president, I am SURE they weren’t that hard to meet. For example, like “meet with your constituents once in your term” and they still couldn’t meet the goals! It is a terrible waste of resources that we still have to continue to fight a war that neither country wants to be in. I DO think it is our duty to comply with “you broke it, you bought it” policy and we need to ensure the safety of Iraqis. That doesn’t mean by necessarily using military force but ensuring that we keep innocent people safe in a divided country that we fabricated. Even Robert Gates states that this needs to be won with political pressure and not militarily. I think now it might be a good idea to take a “we failed” stance and ensure that the people of Iraq and our troops are safe. I just don’t know how they are going to pull this one.
